Kitty has the mutant ability phase through solid matter—including living people—by shifting her atoms so that they pass through the object she is walking through. After practicing for years, Kitty is able to phase other people as well as objects through solid matter, of course physical contact must be maintained. As she phases, she is completely intangible and has trained herself to phase instantaneously, such as at the sound of a gunshot, in order to protect herself. While in this intangible state, Kitty cannot be hit by projectiles or energy blasts. When she comes into electronics while phasing, Kitty can disrupt them. This means the offending electronic device will short out and no longer work.
Her phasing ability also gives Kitty the ability to kill. She can phase an enemy through a solid object and let go, letting them solidify with the object. Her phasing ability can, just like with electrical devices, disrupt the electrical impulses in the brain. While no harm will come to her when phasing through a person, she can potentially render them unconscious.
While phasing, Kitty can walk on air. This means that she has the ability to walk on air currents from the ground floor to the upper stories of a building, like walking on a staircase. She has been known to be able to help others with walking on air as well.
• Weapons | None
• Weaknesses |
While Kitty is phasing, she cannot breathe. This means that she can only remained phased continuously within an object as long as she can hold her breath. If she solidifies within an object, Kitty will result in death. It is can also be painful for her to phase through dense material, as well as making it more difficult for her. Vibranium and Adamantium have been known to be exceptionally difficult for her. Even in her phased form, Kitty is vulnerable to both psionic and mystical attacks.
Kitty’s attachment to her family, especially her children, has caused her to have been manipulated on more than one occasion. She is also very judgmental, never really believing that people can change for the better, such as in the case with Emma Frost. Recent events have made Kitty much colder than she was in the past. She suppresses her feelings and acts in a much more robotic fashion, distancing her to many people in her life.
• Skills |
Kitty has received training from Logan in martial arts—as well as training in the ways of the ninja and the samurai—which is something she has become quite advanced in over the years. She is capable of wielding weapons, such as kantana, with ease. Due, in part, to her training in ballet and modern dance, Kitty is very agile and light on her feet.
Computer are another area where Kitty is an expert. She is a genius in computer science, capable of programming, modifying, and diagnosing almost any computer system: even those of unfamiliar human and extraterrestrial origins. She is fluent in Japanese, German, Russian, and the royal standard of both Shi’ar and Skrull. She also has moderate knowledge of Hebrew and Gaelic. Many of these were learned telepathically for past missions. She is proficient with piloting various vehicles of both human and extraterrestrial origins.

• Height | 5 foot 6 inches
• Weight | 113 pounds
• Hair color & Style | Wavy brown hair that is usually tied back into a ponytail
• Eye color | Hazel
• Face claim | Melinda Clarke
• Overall Appearance |
No longer the round faced youth she once was, Kitty’s older self appears more severe. She has begun developing signs of old age, such as lines around her mouth and crow’s feet. She even dyes her hair to keep it bright and young looking. Usually her naturally wavy hair is tied back into a loose ponytail, in order to keep the hair out of her face while she’s working. Her eyes are just as bright and alert as they were when she was a girl.
Physically, Kitty is much more toned than she was in her youth. By working for the new order, Kitty finds herself working out much more since her days as an X-Man, mostly to keep up with the younger members of SHIELD. She still has a very lean body and muscle type.
Usually, when she isn’t working, Kitty can usually be found in a nice pair of jeans and a blouse. She wears high heels and boots often times. She has a very tailored and sophisticated taste in clothes. She always wears the silver, Star of David necklace her parents gave to her at when she turned 13. The only other piece of jewelry she wears is her father’s gold wedding band, which is only fits around her thumb.
As far as uniforms go, Kitty has had quite a few in her lifetime. Currently, her uniform is a standard issue black leather cat-suit. There is no extra protection with this suit, as it is assumed Kitty can defend herself. Being a minimalist, Kitty doesn’t like carrying any extra equipment if it’s not necessary. Sometimes, if a mission requires it, she will use an utility belt to store any extra items she may need to bring with her or retrieve.

• Favorite Color | Periwinkle – It reminds her of Lockheed, the purple dragon she has been friends with since was thirteen.
• Likes |
• Dislikes |
• Fears | Kitty is afraid of being unable to become solid. She is also afraid of becoming tapped in a room and being unable to phase out of it. However, Kitty’s greatest fear is that something will happen to her children.
• Goals/ dreams | To be reunited with her kids, preferably with the New Order defeated.
• Overall Personality |
Kitty has matured considerably since her beginning days as an X-Man. She has developed into a decisive, slightly cynical woman. If anything, Kitty remains to be very protective of the people who she considers her family. She would do anything to save them, including sacrificing herself. Kitty’s sense of humor is a bit darker than what it used to be. She is still on the snarky, sarcastic side, but doesn’t make quite as many references to pop culture as she used to. She’s not afraid to tell people what she thinks of them, only biting her tongue if a threat is made against the people she loves. She has been known to keep grudges for years.
When she’s working, Kitty is very serious. She keeps focus on her task at hand, not getting easily distracted. Her guard is always up as she witnesses hatred for mutantkind. Kitty likes to keep her focus on one task at a time, feeling she can accomplish things better that way.

Kitty’s upbringing in Deerfield was very average. She was outgoing, popular and very bright for her age. When she was thirteen and a half, she began experiencing very severe headaches. Unknown to Kitty or her parents, this was the development of her mutant ability. As time went on, these headaches became more and more frequent. It wasn’t long until Cerobro picked up Kitty’s signal, and Professor Xavier, Ororo Munroe, Piotr Rasputin and Logan went to go recruit her. Emma Frost, of the Hellfire Club’s Inner Circle, also sought to recruit Kitty for her Hellions at the Massachusetts Academy. While her parents were meeting with Emma, Kitty phased through the floor from the upstairs, revealing her mutant abilities.
Later, after Emma had left, the X-Men took Kitty to a malt shop where they were attacked by members of the Hellfire Club. The X-Men were captured, but Kitty escaped, following behind them. She found the captured X-Men, received the mansion’s phone number, and called the other X-Men for help. After the X-Men were rescued, Kitty’s parents allowed her to go with the X-Men.
Kitty quickly became a valued member of the team. During one mission in space, Kitty discovered a purple dragon, who she named Lockheed (after the company that created the X-Jet). She also developed close friendships with Ororo, Logan, Illyana Rasputin (of the New Mutants) and a crush on Piotr. At one point, Kitty even promised to marry Caliban of the Morlocks for help in saving Piotr’s life. She was eventually released from her vow.
Kitty later travelled to Japan with Logan, who trained her in Japanese matial arts in order for her to fight against Ogun, who had turned into an enemy. It was then that she took up the code-name Shadowcat, which she has used ever since.
After ending her relationship with Piotr, Kitty and Lockheed travelled to England, where they became founding members of the super hero team, Excalibur. She became involved with another member of the team, Peter Wisdom. Though Lockheed didn’t approve of the relationship, Kitty pursued it until the team disbanded.
Kitty returned back to the United States with Lockheed, where she attended New York University. After studying computer science for a year, things took a turn for the worse. Lockheed decided to return to Japan for awhile, wanting to pursue a relationship with Puff, a female, green dragon, who he met when Kitty was training with Logan in Japan. He vowed to return one day. But the worst was yet to come, Kitty’s father was killed during an attack on the island of Genosha. After the attack, Kitty attacked a group of anti-mutant protesters and was subsequently placed in therapy. Though her parents had been divorced for some time, Theresa moved to Queens to help her daughter through her depression. Kitty soon dropped out of college and returned to the Xavier Mansion.
During one particular mission with the X-Men, Kitty met Spider-Man. The two quickly formed a friendship and eventually, he revealed himself to her as Peter Parker. The two began to date, and Kitty was eventually and accidentally impregnated by Peter. Being single, young, and pregnant with Spider-Man’s child was not something Kitty had imagined for herself growing up. She had thought about giving the baby up for adoption, but ultimately decided to keep the child.
Nine months later, Kitty gave birth to her first child, a son that she named Kevin. Motherhood suited Kitty well. Her teammates often asked her for the identity of the father of the child, but Kitty wouldn’t tell them, not wanting to reveal Peter’s secret. Since she and Peter agreed that it would be safer for him not to see his children, Kitty would secretly send him photos of his son as he grew up.
A second encounter between Peter and Kitty led to another pregnancy, this time her daughter Katrina. Kitty doted upon her daughter, seeing her as a second blessing in her life. She again raised the child within the walls of the Xavier Mansion.
But peace was no longer a viable resource. The New Order was slowly gaining influence in New York. Kitty, knowing the danger the Xavier Mansion attracted, asked her mother to watch her children until the New Order could be quieted. Before she left, she revealed that their father was Peter Parker, Spider-Man, and encouraged them to seek him out if they were ever in trouble. Kitty then returned to the mansion in order to help the team.
However, she could not foresee what would happen next. The New Order launched a massive assault on the mansion, killing many of the X-Men. Kitty was among the handful of survivors. She was cornered by the New Order, severely wounded and unable to fight any further. SHIELD stepped in and saved her. It took Kitty many months to recover and after she had, she made the decision to leave her children with her mother, feeling that they would be safer without her around.
For the last several years, Kitty has been working overseas in England. Her ties to Excalibur made it easy for her aid the team with underground mutant resistance, as well as working with STRIKE in order to help their fight for mutant rights. She has recently been ordered to return to New York as that division needs her experience and powers.

New York. The connotations of the name differed heavily from the last time she returned from England. Most of it was déjà vu. Leaving the plane, waiting for her slightly overstuffed luggage, exiting the airport, that was all the same. But as much as she felt the similarities, the differences were overwhelming. Having to give security her papers, to show she was permitted by the government to be there, and the grimace they gave her as they stared back at her after reading “MUTANT” written in the box labeled “Species”, that was what was difference. She was waiting for the day when she would have to where an “M” on her jacket to identify herself at all times.
She kept her head up as she trudged along with her luggage in tow. No reason to let them see her squirm. Kitty stepped out the front of the building, eying the sea of yellow cabs picking up and dropping off people. There was a black SUV that stood out amidst the group, the driver giving her a nod. Of course they had sent a car for her.
Kitty placed her luggage into the trunk before climbing in the back seat. “Nice drive?” the driver asked, the strain of making small talk with a stranger evident in his voice. He paused to adjust his mirror. She could feel his eyes on her.
“It was alright,” Kitty replied, trying to make the conversation as short as possible. They locked eyes for a minute, the silence making things awkward. She clicked her seatbelt into place and the driver drove off.
Kitty watched the buildings fly by as they drove. She knew this place well. New York had been her home for most of her life. She didn’t realize how much she had missed it, even with the extenuating circumstances. She shut her eyes, trying to imagine a different homecoming.
In her mind, Kitty was returning from a long trip overseas, visiting her old friends from Excalibur. She was greeted not by unfriendly security guards, but her mother. They would embrace and she would ask where her children were. Peter’s tired laugh would grow louder as he approached, finally appearing with a large grin and Lockheed atop her shoulder, as they both embraced her, Peter whispering that it was her turn to watch the children. It was then that she would see them, barely up to Peter’s waist—
She stopped, feeling a tear running down her cheek. She didn’t even know what they looked like anymore. All she could remember about them was when they were barely approaching their teenage years, and even then the images in her head were becoming blurred. Did they have her nose? Peter’s eyes? Her father’s chin? Kitty couldn’t remember.
“You okay?” the driver asked, Kitty noticing that he was watching her in the rear-view mirror.
She brushed away the tear’s trail and took a deep, shaky breath. “Perfect,” she sniffed as they continued on. Kitty finally was able to admit it to herself. She hated New York.
